Keep it Cool, Pup!
As the summer heats up, it's not just us humans who need to beat the heat – your pup does too! Dogs can't sweat through their skin like we do, so they rely on panting and releasing heat through their paw pads and noses to cool down. That's why it's crucial to ensure they stay comfortable and safe during the warmer months. Here are some tail-wagging tips to keep your dog cool as a cucumber this summer!
Chill Out at Dog-Friendly Beaches
Massachusetts is home to several dog-friendly beaches where you and your pup can enjoy a day by the water, giving sandy hair and salty kisses a whole new meaning! Stodder’s Neck in Hingham and Crab Beach in Gloucester are just a couple of spots where you can enjoy the surf with your pup. While there are several dog friendly beaches across New England and beyond, remember to check the local beach rules, as some may have specific times when dogs are allowed during the summer season.
Dog-Friendly Frozen Treats
After a day of fun in the sun, what's better than a frozen treat? Whip up some Polka Pup Pops to keep your dog feeling their coolest! Here are a few recipes to try, inspired by your dog’s favorite Polkadog treats!
The Peanut Buddah Luvah – Straight up!
For the pup who lives for a Yappy Hour and always “makes it a double”, this one’s for you! Add Peanut Butter to your mold or enrichment treat toy and sprinkle with Peanut Butter Wonder Nuggets. Freeze for six hours, kick back, and enjoy!
The Pawty Animal
Inspired by our Cake Batter treats, this recipe is for the pup who enjoys ordering their dessert first! Mash a ripe banana, add unsalted, all-natural peanut butter (we personally love Teddie’s!) and plain Greek yogurt. Mix together, top with our soft and chewy Cake Batter treats and freeze in a mold or enrichment treat toy for six hours.
That’s Howl We Casse-ROLL
Peel, boil and mash sweet potato. Mix in a splash of beef bone broth and sprinkle with Sweet Potato and Beef Wonder Nuggets. Freeze in mold for six hours.
The Apple of my Eye
Mix together unsweetened apple sauce and plain Greek yogurt. Top it off with a few Apple and Pork Wonder Nuggets. Freeze for six hours, find a movie on tv, bask in the AC and enjoy!
The PSL – Hold the Spice, Hold the Latte
Inspired by our Turkey & Cranberry Wonder Nuggets, this recipe speaks to the Fall enthusiast! Mix plain pumpkin puree and plain Greek yogurt and pour into a mold or an enrichment treat toy of your choosing and top if off with our Turkey and Cranberry Wonder Nuggets. Freeze for six hours.
***Always consult with your vet before introducing new treats to your dog's diet, especially if they have any food sensitivities or allergies.***
Stay Hydrated and Shaded
Ensure your dog has access to fresh water and shade throughout the day. A kiddie pool or a sprinkler can also provide a fun and cooling playtime activity. If you're out and about, carry a portable water bottle and seek out shady spots for rest. We LOVE the Springer dog water bottles!
Know the Signs of Overheating
Be vigilant and learn the signs of heatstroke in dogs, which can include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and a higher heart rate. If you notice any of these symptoms, move your dog to a cooler area immediately and consult your vet.
The key to a fun summer with your pup is keeping them cool and comfortable. So, grab their leash, pack some Polkadog treats, and get ready for some summer adventures with your bestie!
Enjoy and stay cool! 🐾
